Falkirk District – A Guidebook for brief visitors
Tourism Central Scotland until recently has been dominated by the proximity Stirling offered by the castle and the nearby Wallace Monument. All this has changed!
In 2002 the Falkirk Wheel was opened and is a unique engineering work boat rotary lift only the world, carrying vessels up to 115ft level between the Union and Forth & Clyde Canal. Next the wheel is a reception center interactive a restaurant and a shop that will entertain all ages of visitors.
A short walk from the heart of Falkirk's Callendar Park, Callendar House. A magnificent building has received in the past, Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Oliver Cromwell. The museum is very different where there is a "life" kitchen in 1825, an exhibition, a café / restaurant and much more.
As he passed the House calendar is the Antonine Wall which was built by the Romans in the first century to protect its legions of hostile natives of New Caledonia. It runs east to west of the River Forth & Clyde Join. Although parts of the wall remain, perhaps the best site is Kinneil Woods in Bo'ness.
Bo'ness to just 15 minutes from Falkirk, also offers the Kinneil Railway Bo'ness and largest collection of steam iron path objects in Scotland. Birkhill Clay Mine and recently renovated Hippodrome which was the first public cinema in Scotland in the early 20th century.
To the east and less than 10 minutes in a car, we got to blackness and darkness magnificent castle, a 15th century fortress located immediately to the river Forth and Castle was part of Mel Gibson in his film version of "Hamlet."
Region clear view of the historical importance is often overlooked over, the army of William Wallace was defeated by the English during the reign of Edward 1 Falkirk 1298. Another battle of Falkirk was in 1746 when Bonnie Prince Charlie defeated Hannover.
Other attractions of the Park Gallery in the stable block at Callendar House, opened in 2002 also, the gallery has a varied collection of contemporary art. The Falkirk Council ran Muiravonside Park Located on 170 acres, Muiravonside offers much for those looking for history, and interests wildlife industry.
What if you want to create their own entertainment? As Falkirk is so central and local authorities on the ground immediately, not too demanding, can offer much to those who seek outside work. These include hiking, biking, horseback riding and more.
On a personal level, one of my cycling Bo'ness is preferable to the darkness of the castle along the coast of the river Forth. A short walk through the area of the city Carriden, then along a well maintained, with the wood on your left and the end of the kingdom of Fife Forth research, on the left.
There are a multitude of activities available in the tourist area and recommend to anyone seeking variety and something a little different.
